Born in France Michel Béroff started his studies at the Nancy Conservatoire and then went on to the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the first prize in 1966. Michel made his debut in Paris as a recitalist and was highly acclaimed. He then was the top-prize winner at the Olivier Messiaen International Piano Competition. He also studied the art of conducting Orchestras and piano repertoire for left hand.
Michel became one of the most highly regarded pianists performing the work of Messiaen, Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, Prokofiev, Mozart, Debussy, Mussorgsky, Stravinsky, Schumann and Schubert. Michel has performed throughout the world with conductors including Abbado, Barenboim, Bernstein, Boulez, Dorati, Dutoit, Masur, Ozawa, Previn, Rostropovich, Sinopoli, Solti and Tennstedt. As a recitalist and a chamber musician he has worked with Pierre Amoyal, Jean-Philippe Collard, Augustin Dumay, Barbara Hendricks and Lynn Harrell. Previous concerto work include performances of Bartok's Piano Concerto no 2 with Pierre Boulez and the London Symphony Orchestra during the Boulez Festival in London and Paris. During March 1996 he toured Japan performing the works of Debussy with the NHK Symphony and Japan Shinsei Symphony Orchestra and returned there in September that same to perform at the Saito Kinen Festival and to record Le Bal Masque with Seiji Ozawa and Wolfgang Holzmair for Philips Classics. An immensely versatile artist, he has also worked with the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague performing Stravinsky in an orchestral and recital project and also gave four successful series recitals in Paris, covering the entire work for piano by Debussy. During the 1999/2000 season Michel performed with the New York Philharmonic and Kurt Masur, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Concertgebouw and toured with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Among his important discography, the recording of the complete works for piano and orchestra by Prokofiev with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Kurt Masur out on EMI, Stravinsky and Liszt, as well as other works by Messiaen, Schumann, Brahms and Debussy. He has recorded the Ravel Concerto for Left Hand with the London Symphony Orchestra and Claudio Abbado out on Deutsche Grammophone.
